As you know, I gave away book 1 in my Forest Lord series, Wolf’s Head, over three days last week. Some authors don’t agree with offering their hard work for free but the idea is that people will discover your writing, enjoy it, and go on to purchase your other books at full price. Everyone wins.
Wolf’s Head managed to reach number 3 in the overall Amazon UK chart, and number 5 in the USA with similar placings in India, Canada and Australia*! I honestly didn’t expect it to get as high as that – I think the highest I’ve reached with a freebie before was about top 50 or so. I must admit, I was out working my day job on the Wednesday when it hit number 3 and I went to the shop on my way home to buy a cheap bottle of Cava just in case it reached the top and I needed to take a pic for Facebook with a glass of champers! I never got to open the bottle yet, but those results were fantastic. My other books also jumped up the charts, particularly in the USA, and even the Audible versions got a nice boost, as did my “Author Ranking” as you can see from the pic (which I managed to crop my own face out of for some reason).
Thank you to everyone who helped me by sharing the promotion on social media, leaving reviews etc, and thanks to all who downloaded the book – I hope you like it and buy the rest of the series (posters available too!)
Top 3 UK!

*To anyone interested, I used “Kindle Books & Tips” to promote the deal on day 1, and it led to about 560 downloads, but the promotion only cost $25 or something. Day 2 it was featured on Bookbub and that’s when the really big numbers came in, with 33,000 readers loading Wolf’s Head into their Kindle library! Bookbub costs a LOT more to advertise with (and it’s totally worth every penny), but “Kindle Books & Tips” is a great service too which I use regularly. I’m really grateful to both those sites and highly recommend them to other authors looking for a great value boost to their back catalogue.
“CONGRATULATIONS” Steven!!!! That’s fantastic! ‘No-3’ is pretty bloody amazing. I’ve been an avid reader of yours for several years now and believe your take on Robin Hood and his men is the best I’ve read, I fell in love with all the characters and I even learnt some history along the way, what more can a reader want. I am so happy for you!! All the very best for your future endeavours.
